At a Glance Within our own borders and waiting for you (and your camera) are countless untamed landscapes of breathtaking natural beauty. AOE’s eight-day journey brings you this close to the Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Yellowstone, and Grand Teton National Parks. Join AOE’s professional team of naturalists and guides to study native plants and wildlife, and learn more about the first inhabitants of our country. Only on a train can you depart the Grand Canyon at sunset, enjoy a delicious dinner and relaxing evening, then awake the next day at Zion National Park. AOE's eight-day tour of the Pacific Northwest and Rockies is just as breathtaking. Ever since Lewis & Clark first traveled the untamed wilderness of the Great Northwest, people have yearned to experience its scope and beauty. There's never been a better time to do so, since this year marks the bi-centennial of the Corps of Discovery. Follow many of the same routes while you become a major part of the golden age of rail travel. The itinerary is truly one of the more scenic rail journeys in North America. You'll experience four major mountain ranges, fertile agricultural regions of Idaho and Eastern Washington, the headwaters of the Missouri River in Montana, and Glacier, Yellowstone, and Teton National Parks. Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Yellowstone, and Grand Teton National Parks Day 1 — Arrive in Santa Fe, New Mexico After independent arrivals at the hotel, meet for a private welcome reception and dinner. Take this opportunity to meet the train staff and other guests who will be joining us on the journey. This evening, overnight at the Inn at Loretto. (Dinner) Day 2 — Santa Fe/Board the American Orient Express After breakfast in the hotel, depart for a guided walking tour of the old plaza. Lunch is served at La Casa Sena with leisure time afterward to browse and shop at local galleries and museums. Transfer by motor-coach to Albuquerque where you’ll board the American Orient Express. This evening, dinner is served on board as you traverse the beautiful landscape of New Mexico en route to the next destination, Grand Canyon National Park. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) Day 3 — Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona Awake at the steps of Grand Canyon National Park this morning. With its unfathomable dimensions, 277 miles long and 18 miles wide, this geologic wonder is perhaps America’s most spectacular. Spend the morning at the South Rim, where the constant play of light and shadow profoundly changes the colors of the plateaus and mesas within the chasm. Nearly a mile below, the Colorado River continues its slow work, deepening the canyon a fraction of an inch every year. Return to the train to enjoy dinner and overnight on board en route to Cedar City. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) Day 4 — Zion National Park, Utah After breakfast on the train, board motor-coaches and transfer to Zion National Park. Millions of years of unrelenting erosion have formed this primeval wonderland of red sandstone buttes, domes and sheer canyon walls. The “heavenly city of God,” or Zion, was named by early settlers and park visitors still find the label appropriate. Explore the park on a scenic drive following a winding river, with frequent stops along the way and options to hike groomed trails. Back on board the train, enjoy dinner and overnight stabled in Cedar City. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) Day 5 — Cedar Breaks National Monument, Utah This morning, enjoy breakfast on the train before departing on motor-coaches to explore Cedar Breaks National Monument. Years of erosion and uplift have created a deep canyon of rock walls, fins, spires and columns that spans 3 miles and is over 2,000 feet deep – often called a “huge natural amphitheater of pink cliffs.” Tour this spectacular region by coach, stopping for short hikes and stunning views along the way. In the evening, enjoy dinner and overnight on board the train en route to Idaho Falls. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) Day 6 — Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming This morning, enjoy breakfast on board the train and with your overnight bags, depart on motor-coaches to view the astounding sights of Yellowstone National Park. The park protects more than two-million acres of wilderness – a glimpse of the West from centuries past. Miles below the park’s surface, water and molten rock converge, creating over 10,000 boiling springs, mud pots and geysers. After a full day of exploring, gather for dinner and overnight in a nearby lodge. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) Day 7 — Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming After breakfast in the lodge, board motor-coaches and set out to the Teton Mountain Range. At the foot of these mountains lie Jackson and Jenny Lakes – these mirror lakes are majestic, yet tranquil, a favorite site for photographers and sightseers. Centuries ago, Native Americans hunted the great elk herds that gathered at the foot of the range. Today, spend the day exploring this spectacular region, stopping for lunch at the Museum of Wildlife Art which overlooks an elk refuge. This evening, transfer back to the train to enjoy a farewell cocktail reception and dinner. Overnight on board en route to Salt Lake City. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) Day 8 — Salt Lake City, Utah The American Orient Express journey ends here after breakfast. Stay on in Salt Lake City for additional sightseeing or make individual arrangements to return home. (Breakfast) Included Features · Overnight at the Inn at Loretto on the first night · Welcome cocktail reception and private dinner · 7 dinners with complimentary wine · 6 lunches · 7 full American breakfasts and optional continental breakfasts · Non-alcoholic beverages · Professionally guided tours of Grand Canyon, Cedar Breaks National Monument, Zion, Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks · Overnight stay at Jackson Lake Lodge, Grand Teton National Park · Comprehensive lecture series · Live piano music nightly · Deluxe rail accommodations for 5 nights · Personal Service by rail car attendant · Farewell cocktail reception |
